Â
âWeâre pleased and fortunate that Lara is willing to extend her time here to connect and to dialogue with our community,â said DSO Executive Director J.C. Barker. âWeâre certain her wisdom and insight will be invaluable to all young artists and arts supporters in Delaware, especially during this period of change in our society.â
Â
The conversation precedes Ms. Downesâ guest artist performance with the DSO on Friday, June 3, at 7:30pm as part of its rescheduled Classics Series concert, Celebrate! Ms. Downes and the Delaware Symphony will perform works including Gershwinâs An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, as well as Rachmaninoffâs Symphonic Dances. Tickets for that performance may be purchased at DelawareSymphony.org.
Â
âWe are equally excited to present Ms. Downes at CCAC, to discuss her plight as an artist of color in a field dominated by the majority and in one that is highly competitive and with many obstacles and challenges to overcome,â said James âRayâ Rhodes, Executive Director of Christina Cultural Arts Center.
Â
âThis wonderful partnership project between Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Christina Cultural Arts Center, and The Grand Opera House exemplifies the collaborative spirit of the Wilmington arts community,â says Mark Fields, The Grandâs executive director. âWe were really good at working cooperatively even before COVID, but our struggles during the pandemic have only reinforced our commitment to being better together.â
