Local business owners and elected officials
to participate in opening of 3rd Black-Owned Business within Wilmington’s
LOMA district.
The Honorable James M. Baker, mayor of the City of Wilmington, will celebrate
the grand opening of Urban Avenue clothing store, located at 221 North
Market Street, with an official ribbon cutting scheduled for Monday, June
22 at 11 a.m. Councilwoman Hanifa Shabazz (D - 4th District) will also
be in attendance to commemorate the opening of another Black-owned business
along the 200 block of North Market Street within the city’s budding
LOMA District.
With the opening of Urban Avenue, its owner Bruce Davis says that Delaware
residents no longer need to travel to King of Prussia Mall or Philadelphia
in search of sought-after, high end labels. The store features labels
such as True Religion Brand Jeans, MEK Denim, Alternative Apparel, Monarchy,
and many more. Urban Avenue’s former location was inside the Christiana
Mall; however, 26-year old Davis says he wanted to take advantage of the
ever expanding and always developing Downtown Wilmington.
“I see so much potential within the LOMA district, is mostly started
with success of The Rebel Restaurant. I would like to encourage other
entrepreneurs to take advantage of this area as well,” says Davis.
Following the recent successful openings in LOMA, including The Firm
Barbershop (formally located at 223 North Market Street , now located
on 9th St) and The Rebel Restaurant and Catering (201 North Market Street),
Councilwoman Shabazz is excited about the spirit of entrepreneurship taking
place within her district.
“As an entrepreneur myself, it is good [for me] to see everything
going on downtown, especially another young Black male completely breaking
all kinds of modes that society has placed. For him to open up a store
and make business for himself I'm absolutely flabbergasted,” explains
Councilwoman Shabazz. “Bruce is an inspiration to young people;
he’s providing clothing to his peers and showing what the young
urban look is like. He has the creative eye to select a great product
line.”
Wilmington’s Main Street Committee recently chose Davis as one
of three nominees to receive a free consultation from small business consultant
Margie Davis of ShopTalk, a Virginia Beach-based small business consulting
firm.
To help welcome Urban Avenue to the neighborhood, Alex Grant, owner of
The Rebel Restaurant and Catering, will offer food for grand opening attendees.
He plans to have a grilling station set up along the block offering free
hot dogs, and says he hopes to contribute to the ongoing success of small
businesses throughout the block.
Urban Avenue is a retail clothing store featuring sought after brands
within the clothing industry. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 11
a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit Urban Avenue at 221 North Market
