Delmarva Black Chamber of Commerce Makes Its Debut In Delaware
The new chamber was created based on analysis of the factors associated with the development and growth of Black enterprises. The Delmarva Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC) has been created to provide committed and visionary leadership in increasing the revenues of Black businesses through the creation of resources in the areas of networking, education and advocacy that positively impact the economic development and empowerment of the Black communities in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The creation of the chamber was prompted by the fact that most of the existing business organizations in the state were not sufficiently addressing significant issues impacting Black enterprises and entrepreneurs, which include increased access to public/private/nonprofit sector contracting opportunities and the development of targeted economic development resources. “For a growing number of African Americans, economic parity is essential in achieving the elusive goal of equality. A major component in achieving economic parity is economic development and empowerment in the Black community. A major element in our economic empowerment and empowerment is the growth of the Black business community. The growth of the Black business community is essential as enterprises create much needed jobs, recycle essential capital within the community and engender positive economic activity” says Clayton Hammond, Chairman of the DBCC. “While Delaware has the second lowest small business formation rate in the nation based on research from the Kaufman Foundation, minority owned enterprises are growing three times faster than general businesses nationally. If this national trend is realized in Delaware, it can significantly impact the state’s economy through increased job creation, increased tax revenue and the growth of it’s small business community, which is a significant economic engine”, says Mr. Hammond. The Delmarva Chamber of Commerce will offer a myriad of resources to address the needs of entrepreneurs and enterprises. These resources include teleconferences and webinars on a myriad of timely topics, an array of products and services (e-mail hosting, merchant services, medical/health insurance, business coaching, virtual assistant, “Total Marketing Solution”, etc.), regional networking events, advocating for Black businesses in the public/private/private sectors and it’s website (www.DelmarvaBCC.org). The chamber initially is offering a series of monthly teleconferences designed to help entrepreneurs become successful in the area of Federal government contracting. While the name of the organization suggests that it only serves Black entrepreneurs and businesses, membership is open to any entrepreneur who is serious about growing their business.
