The ninth annual HBCU Week officially began in Wilmington with a powerful Gospel Brunch that set the tone for a week dedicated to legacy, culture, and opportunity. The event was filled with anointed music, heartfelt testimonies, and a strong sense of community, reminding attendees why Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) remain central to Black excellence.

After the brunch, Ashley Christopher, Esq., CEO and Founder of HBCU Week, shared her thoughts with Saniya Gay (Delawareblack.com Media Correspondent) on why starting with faith was so important.
The Importance of a Spiritual Kickoff
“There’s no better way to start this week. HBCU homecomings typically begin with a convocation, remembering the legacy, the spiritual significance, and honoring why we’re here. I felt it was important to bring that same spirit to HBCU Week. It sets the tone and makes sure the rest of the week falls in line.”
The emotion in the room proved her point—many were moved to tears as the celebration blended worship with community pride.
Nine Years of Growth
This year marks the ninth anniversary of HBCU Week, a milestone Christopher reflected on with gratitude:
“It’s surreal. I remember in 2017 when we did the very first activation. Fast forward to 2025, it just gets bigger and better. I’m really excited for year 10. It has to be huge.”
Scholarships that Change Lives
While the celebrations are powerful, Christopher emphasized her top priority: raising funds for students.
“What I always look forward to most is raising money for students to attend the HBCU of their choice. Our awards range between $10,000 and $132,000 per student. To be able to call a student and say, ‘You’ve been selected for this scholarship’, it’s life changing. To be a vessel in providing that kind of opportunity, there’s really nothing like it.”
Looking Ahead
As the week unfolds, Christopher hopes to see strong participation across Wilmington, reminding everyone that the true heart of HBCU Week is ensuring students gain access to the opportunities that will shape their futures.
