About Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy
The Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy, located in Wilmington’s East Side neighborhood, is the first new school built in the city in 50 years. Opening in fall 2024, it replaced the former Bancroft School and was named in honor of Maurice Pritchett Sr., who served as Bancroft’s principal for over three decades. The $84 million facility serves students from 1st to 8th grade, with capacity for approximately 600 students, and was designed to provide a modern, inspiring learning environment. Its ribbon-cutting ceremony and community block party were held on August 23, 2024, marking a historic moment for the Christina School District and Wilmington’s educational landscape.
About Maurice Pritchett Sr.
Maurice Pritchett Sr. was a respected educator, leader, and community advocate in Wilmington, Delaware. Born in 1942, he graduated from Howard High School as an All-City Basketball pick and earned his degree in Elementary Education from Delaware State University in 1965. After teaching in Maryland and Wilmington, he returned to Bancroft School—where he had been a student himself—as Community School Director, later becoming Vice Principal and then Principal.
During his 30-year tenure as Principal at Bancroft (1975-2005), Mr. Pritchett transformed the school into a hub for education and community engagement, developing strong academic programs and initiating numerous activities to support students beyond the classroom. His dedication earned him recognition as Delaware’s 1994 National Distinguished Principal. After leaving Bancroft, he served as Director of Family & Community Engagement and Assistant to the Superintendent of Christina School District. Mr. Pritchett retired in 2008 and continued his commitment to education through consulting with his wife, Juanita. He passed away in April 2023, leaving a powerful legacy of excellence, service, and community empowerment.
“This is a great opportunity for our community to engage in the decision-making process and ensure the next principal is the right fit for our students, families, and staff,” said district representatives.
RSVPs are encouraged to help organizers prepare adequate food and child care for all who attend.
