Hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, co-founder of the groundbreaking group Run-DMC, brought the house down at the 3rd Annual Hip Hop Cultural Summit, held Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Delaware Art Museum.
The summit — presented by AllHipHop, Guerrilla Republik, and the Delaware Art Museum — united artists, educators, activists, and fans to celebrate the legacy and cultural power of hip-hop as a movement for storytelling, truth, and social change.
In an exclusive interview with DelawareBlack.com, DMC shared his timeless perspective on how the culture can continue to uplift, evolve, and unite communities:
“Hip-hop is all about storytelling and empowerment,” DMC said. “We need to talk about all the issues that address us — and everything that’s not being presented in our culture is the very thing to make the records about.”
He explained that while many artists today focus on the same mainstream themes, hip-hop’s greatest strength has always come from authenticity and originality — voices willing to say something different.
“You got so many people in hip hop rhyming about the same things and being successful — it’s cool. But everybody who always came with something different was the one that helped us evolve and expand.”
DMC reminded the audience that his own rise to stardom came not from glorifying negativity, but from celebrating identity and family pride:
“I never sold drugs. I just talked about my family:
‘Son of Byford, brother of Al, Banner’s my mother, runs my pal.
It’s McDaniels, not McDonald’s… I ran down my family tree — my mother, my father.’”
That, he said, is the kind of storytelling that connects generations and strengthens communities.
“When we start talking about concepts and themes that we all relate to as a people — that’s when we grow, and that’s when everybody eats.”
At the Delaware Art Museum, DMC not only delivered a powerful keynote but also participated in open discussions and book signings — reminding everyone that hip-hop’s greatest legacy is unity through truth.
“The only place to be right now is right here — with DelawareBlack.com — ‘cause they got it going on!”
