The Delaware NAACP State Conference of Branches proudly announces that Fleur McKendell has been sworn in as State Conference President following the untimely passing of veteran NAACP leader Richard “Mouse” Smith. As a longtime civil rights and social justice leader and activist, McKendell is committed to upholding Smith’s legacy while ensuring that the NAACP continues its vital work in advancing equity, protecting democracy, and empowering communities across Delaware.

“For decades, Mouse stood on the frontlines advocating for freedom, equality, and justice. His unwavering commitment to fighting for the disenfranchised and holding power to account made him a towering figure in the struggle for Black liberation and social justice. Although his voice can no longer be heard, his legacy will continue to blaze a trail for justice that can never be silenced. The Delaware NAACP will march forward, and stronger than ever, in his honor.”

Under McKendell’s leadership, the Delaware NAACP will focus on strengthening local branches, increasing civic engagement, and addressing critical issues such as voting rights, education equity, economic justice, and criminal justice reform. Recognizing the challenges ahead, McKendell calls on community members, elected officials, and stakeholders to join in this collective mission.

“The fight for civil rights does not pause,” she emphasized. “The political climate is shifting, and civil rights are under attack. Now more than ever, we must be organized, vigilant, and unapologetic in our pursuit of justice. The Delaware’s NAACP will not be silent. We will not be complacent. We will not back down. We will continue to be a force for change, a voice for the unheard, and a shield against injustice.”

McKendell brings a wealth of experience in policy advocacy, strategic planning, and community organizing. As the first woman to serve as the Delaware NAACP State Conference President in recent history, her appointment marks a historic moment in the organization’s ongoing efforts to foster diversity, inclusion, and grassroots empowerment.
