On January 3, 2025, Lisa Blunt Rochester was sworn in as a U.S. Senator from Delaware, making history as the state’s first woman and African American to hold this position. Her election is particularly significant as she and Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland become the first Black women to serve concurrently in the U.S. Senate. Before this, only three Black women had ever served in the Senate: Carol Moseley Braun, Kamala Harris, and Laphonza Butler. Blunt Rochester’s victory reflects a broader movement towards increased diversity and representation in American politics.
