Wilmington, Delaware-based visual artist James Wyatt has made a significant impact on the local art scene through painting, sculpture, and graphic design. With murals and sculptures throughout the city, their creative footprint is hard to miss. He has designed logos, worked with a local magazine, and taught both private lessons and a popular 11-week art course at the Route 9 Library in partnership with The New Castle County Art Studio and The Sold Firm, now in its fourth successful year.

Tell us about your business, service, career, or talent.

Art has always been in my blood; it runs in my family. My main focus is painting with acrylics, and I’ve developed a style I call “surrealism in 3D.” I’ve been working in this style since 2002, and it’s all about breaking the flat plane of the canvas with fully three-dimensional elements.

Why did you decide to become a business owner?

Honestly, my art made the way for me. I started creating at a young age, and people responded to it. They wanted to support what I was doing, and that momentum just kept growing.

What are your biggest wins thus far?

I’ve had a few wins, but one that stands out was in 2021, when one of my pieces was selected for archiving by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs. It was chosen to represent the times through art and will remain in their collection permanently.

Is there anyone you would like to thank who has helped you on your journey?

My family. Their support, especially when I was just starting, meant everything. That kind of encouragement can make all the difference for a young artist.

When you are not working, what do you do for fun or relaxation?

I’m usually spending time with my son or getting outside—hiking in the woods is one of my favorite ways to unwind.

What is your talent, product, or service?
I’m a painter—working in acrylic and digital formats—a sculptor, a graphic designer, and an art teacher.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others in your industry?

What sets me apart is my unique visual style. I create pieces that incorporate full 3D elements, literally pushing the boundaries of the canvas. I’ve been working in this style since 2002, and it still excites me every time I create something new.

What inspires you to do the work you do?

Inspiration is everywhere for me. It could be a color, a sound, a smell, anything can spark an idea and push me to create.

What’s your favorite part about doing business in Delaware?

Delaware is one of those rare places where, if you’re consistent, word of mouth can still carry you. You don’t necessarily need a huge marketing budget to be seen or heard.

Who are the people you want to help?

Right now, I’m focused on helping young and emerging artists. I just want to give them a few tips and some encouragement to keep going. There’s an audience for every type of art—you just have to find your lane and stay true to it.

What keeps you motivated to keep following your dreams?

Freedom. Creating is my path to both mental and physical freedom. That’s what keeps me going.

What impact is your business making on the community?

I’m helping people understand the importance of the arts. Especially now, it’s so important to have healthy outlets to express yourself and work through what you’re feeling.

As it relates to Black business, what does Delaware need more of?

We need to continue growing and adding as much variety as possible to the Black business community. Diversity within our ecosystem is essential.

Is there anything we should be looking forward to coming from you or that you want our readers to know?

Yes! Right now, I have a Beyoncé-inspired show on display at The Sold Firm Art Gallery. It’ll be running for the next few months—definitely worth checking out.
