A historic milestone for Delaware’s arts community was celebrated as Melodic Movements Dance Studio, founded by Melody Hubert, officially opened its second location in Dover, becoming the first Black-owned dance studio in Delaware to operate in two locations.
The grand opening ceremony drew students, families, community leaders, and supporters who came together to witness the ribbon-cutting and celebrate a journey that began more than a decade ago.
A Vision Rooted in Faith and Community
Melody Hubert, a Wilmington native and graduate of Cab Calloway School of the Arts, has devoted over 14 years to teaching dance and mentoring young people.
Reflecting on the moment, Hubert said,
“Today we cut the ribbon on Melodic Movements Dover. This journey has been nothing short of a testament of faith and proof that with God all things are possible. Thank you to everyone who has poured into this vision, believing in the power of dance to transform lives. A special thank-you to Brielle, our founding member of the Dover studio, for blessing today’s celebration with a beautiful performance.”
From its first studio in Wilmington to this expansion into Dover, Hubert’s mission has remained consistent: to use dance as a tool for empowerment, self-expression, and discipline for children and teens across Delaware.
Expanding Opportunities for Youth
The new Dover studio will provide accessible, high-quality dance instruction for students in Kent County and surrounding communities. The expansion allows Melodic Movements to reach more youth — many of whom may not otherwise have had access to professional dance training, while continuing to build on its reputation as one of Delaware’s leading performing arts institutions.
Hubert emphasized that the new location is about more than just growth:
“Our vision has always been to create a safe and inspiring space where young people can explore their creativity, develop discipline, and gain confidence. Dance is an art form, but it’s also a way to teach life skills that last well beyond the studio.”
A Testament to Delaware Black Excellence
The expansion represents a significant moment in Delaware’s cultural landscape, highlighting the contributions of Black entrepreneurs and artists. By establishing a presence in both Wilmington and Dover, Melodic Movements underscores the importance of representation and inclusion in the performing arts.
Community members and local leaders have praised Hubert’s commitment to empowering youth through movement and mentorship. The studio’s work aligns with broader efforts to invest in cultural opportunities that reflect Delaware’s diverse communities.
Looking Ahead
With the opening of the new location, Hubert hopes to deepen community partnerships, expand scholarship opportunities, and develop new performance programs that inspire and uplift the next generation of dancers.
