The Frederick Douglass & Marcus Garvey Academy (FDMG), a long-awaited school project spearheaded by Dr. Umar Johnson (@drumarjohnson), has suffered a serious setback following a reported act of vandalism that damaged key educational resources and cultural items. The incident, which came to light on June 14, 2025, targeted the interior of the building, resulting in the destruction of a 5,000-book library, various cultural artifacts, and educational supplies. Fortunately, the physical structure of the school itself remains intact.

Although the full scope of the damage has not been officially confirmed, early reports suggest that the loss of materials was significant enough to delay the school’s planned opening. Originally expected to welcome students earlier, the FDMG Academy is now projected to open in September 2026.

Dr. Johnson, known for his outspoken advocacy for independent Black education, expressed deep disappointment over the attack, but affirmed that recovery efforts are already underway. Supporters of the school have begun rallying to replace the destroyed materials and rebuild momentum for the institution’s mission.

While the incident has understandably sparked concern and speculation online, Johnson and his team have urged the public to remain focused on the broader goal of educational empowerment rather than sensationalism. As investigations continue and recovery plans take shape, the community remains hopeful that the vision of the FDMG Academy will still come to life—stronger and more resilient than before.
