Today, New Castle County Executive Marcus Henry joined Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice C.J. Seitz, and former student James “Sonny” Knott at Hockessin Colored School #107C to commemorate the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education. The event honored the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement that laid the foundation for equal educational opportunities nationwide.

Hockessin Colored School #107C holds deep historical significance as one of the schools involved in Gebhart v. Belton, a Delaware case that was one of the five consolidated into Brown v. Board. As the only case in which a state court ordered the integration of schools before the Supreme Court ruling, Delaware played a critical role in shaping the outcome of the decision. Today’s event served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the ongoing work to ensure equity in education.
