The 2025 Delaware City–Polktown Juneteenth Event Planning Committee invites the public to participate in two powerful events commemorating Juneteenth—the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. These events, held on Tuesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 19 (Juneteenth), aim to educate, reflect, and celebrate Black history, culture, and resilience.
Exploring Black Family Roots: Genealogy Night at Delaware City Library
On Tuesday, June 17 at 6:00 PM, the Delaware City Library will host an informative event titled “African American Genealogy Research: Resources and Strategies.”
Two highly respected experts in historical research will lead the evening:

Leah Greer, Archivist at the Delaware Public Archives, will deliver a presentation on “Black Family History at the Delaware Public Archives,” providing valuable tools for those interested in exploring their family roots through state-held records.

Rosalyn Green, President of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society – Delaware Chapter, will offer guidance on conducting African American genealogical research and building an effective research strategy.

Honoring the Ancestors: Juneteenth Commemorative Service
On Thursday, June 19 at 10:00 AM, the community is invited to gather at the African Union Church Cemetery for a solemn Juneteenth Commemorative Service. The ceremony will include:

Spiritual and patriotic musical selections

The raising of the American and Juneteenth flags

Remarks from local historians, an archaeologist, and elected officials

A heartfelt wreath-laying ceremony

A recitation of the names of African American soldiers interred at the site
This service offers a powerful opportunity to reflect on the legacy of freedom and honor those who paved the way for future generations.
Cultural Celebration at Delaware City Battery Park
Following the morning’s service, the celebration continues into the afternoon and evening with a Black-Owned Businesses and Organizations Cultural Expo at Delaware City Battery Park. This vibrant community gathering will feature:

Vendor booths showcasing Black-owned businesses and community organizations

Food, music, art, and cultural exhibits
