In a time when Black history is increasingly under threat, a powerful new initiative is ensuring that the legacy of one of its greatest heroes is not forgotten. Recently featured in Essence, the 14-day “Journey to Freedom” Global Leadership Experience Tour retraces the courageous steps of Harriet Tubman along the Underground Railroad, offering young Black girls a transformative encounter with history, leadership, and self-discovery.

On Wednesday, June 25, the tour will make its way to Wilmington, Delaware, with a meaningful stop at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park, named in honor of both Harriet Tubman and Thomas Garrett, her abolitionist ally.

Celebrating “Black Moses”

More than just a historical field trip, the Global LET is a counter-narrative to efforts aimed at erasing Black history and even denying Tubman’s existence. The tour shines a spotlight on Tubman’s global impact as “Black Moses,” ensuring her bravery and legacy continue to inspire future generations.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

The tour is comprised of young Black girls, ages 11 to 18, from Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. All participants are part of Leadership LINKS, a nonprofit mentorship organization focused on holistic leadership development for young women of color.

The initiative is co-led by:

  • Dr. Natasha Sistrunk Robinson, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, former Marine, co-founder of Leadership LINKS, and author of Journey to Freedom and A Sojourner’s Truth. Her books serve as a foundation for the spiritual and educational journey guiding the tour.

  • Dr. Greg Thompson, co-author of Reparations: A Christian Call for Repentance and Repair and co-founder of Voices Underground, a collective dedicated to uncovering and sharing African American history through storytelling, scholarship, and art.

The tour begins in Stoneville, North Carolina and concludes in Toronto, Canada, tracing Tubman’s escape route to freedom. Stops include:

  • Monticello (VA)

  • Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center (MD)

  • National Museum of African American History and Culture (DC)
