The National Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has appointed Scot Esdaile, President of the Connecticut NAACP State Conference and member of the NAACP National Board of Directors, as Administrator of the Wilmington, Delaware branch. Mr. Esdaile will lead a comprehensive reorganization effort to strengthen the branch’s operations, financial stability, and community impact.

This appointment marks a return to Delaware for Esdaile, who previously served as Administrator of the Delaware NAACP State Conference alongside longtime civil rights leader Richard “Mouse” Smith. During that tenure, he helped revitalize the State Conference’s governance, membership, and advocacy programs. Now, he brings decades of institutional knowledge and national leadership to the Wilmington branch during this critical period of transition.

Key Responsibilities & Vision

As Administrator, Mr. Esdaile will oversee all aspects of the Wilmington branch, including:

  • Governance & Compliance: Ensuring alignment with NAACP policies, resolving outstanding financial obligations, and restructuring branch operations.

  • Membership & Outreach: Reigniting local engagement through membership drives, partnerships with community stakeholders, and youth programs.

  • Advocacy & Programs: Prioritizing voter empowerment, criminal justice reform, educational equity, and economic justice initiatives tailored to Wilmington’s needs.

  • Financial Accountability: Managing expenditures, fundraising, and debt reduction in collaboration with the National Office.

In a statement, Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, emphasized Esdaile’s unique qualifications:

“Scot’s leadership on the National Board and his proven track record in reorganizing state conferences make him the ideal leader for this moment. His deep understanding of Delaware’s challenges, and his prior work there, will ensure the Wilmington branch emerges stronger and more focused than ever.”

Scot Esdaile reflected on the opportunity:

“This is a homecoming of sorts. Years ago, I had the privilege of working alongside Brother Richard ‘Mouse’ Smith to rebuild the Delaware State Conference. Now, I’m honored to return and partner with Wilmington’s dedicated members to help restore this branch as a beacon for justice. We will confront systemic inequities head-on and amplify marginalized voices in Wilmington.”

Fleur McKendell, President of the Delaware NAACP State Conference of Branches, added:

“I promised the people of Wilmington a strong and effective NAACP branch, and that commitment guided my request to the National Office for an Administrator. I am pleased that Mr. Esdaile has been appointed to fulfill this role, as he brings the proven qualifications, experience, and vision needed to lead these efforts. Together, we will ensure the Wilmington branch once again stands as a pillar of justice, advocacy, and service for the Wilmington community.”

Background & Next Steps

The Wilmington branch’s administration follows a vote by the NAACP National Board to provide strategic oversight and resources to ensure its long-term success. Mr. Esdaile will work closely with the Delaware State Conference, local leaders, and the National Office to implement reforms, recruit new leadership, and re-engage grassroots supporters.

A community town hall and membership meeting will be announced in the coming weeks to outline priorities and gather input.
