This past weekend brought big moments for both the University of Delaware and Delaware State, two programs rising in confidence under their respective coaches. Let’s dive into what went down, who’s making waves, and what comes next.
Delaware Fighting Blue Hens — First FBS Win!
What Happened:
Delaware pulled off a thrilling 44–41 overtime victory over UConn, marking their first-ever win over an FBS opponent since moving up from FCS/Division I in 2025.
It was a game full of momentum swings: offense lit up, big plays popped, and the Blue Hens held on in clutch moments. Quarterback Nick Minicucci was stellar, including a walk-off quarterback draw in OT. Running back Jo Silver had a massive day on the ground.
Coach Spotlight — Ryan Carty:
Ryan Carty, in his fourth season leading the program, is now guiding Delaware through its first full year at the FBS level in Conference USA. The expectations are higher, and this win validates a lot of what he and his staff have been building, confidence, competitiveness, and a belief that the program can contend at this higher level.
What’s Next:
Conference USA play begins soon. Their next major test is FIU (Florida International University). This game will be a litmus test — to see if Delaware can carry momentum into league play against seasoned FBS competition.
Delaware State Hornets — Two in a Row at Long Last
What Happened:
Delaware State, under first-year head coach DeSean Jackson, picked up their second win in a row for the first time in a few seasons. Previously they had been struggling to string together back-to-back victories.
- On September 6, they edged out Albany 37–32, a chaotic, weather-delayed game that wound up lasting 7½ hours due to multiple delays. The game-winning score came with just 34 seconds leftover.
- Then on September 13, they dominated Bowie State 36–14, with explosive plays early and a lead built large in the first half.
Coach Spotlight — DeSean Jackson:
Jackson, known for his NFL career, took over a Hornets program that had won only 2 of 23 games over the previous two seasons. The turnaround, while still very early, shows signs of culture-shift: resiliency (especially in the Albany game), faster starts, and execution.
What’s Next:
Delaware State heads out on the road next to face Saint Francis University (Pennsylvania) on September 20. It’ll be a test away from home as they try to keep the momentum. Following that, the Hornets have non-conference games at Sacred Heart and Monmouth before MEAC play kicks in.
