Energy and excitement filled The Queen in downtown Wilmington during this year’s HBCU Week concert, but one of the most memorable moments happened backstage. DelawareBlack.com’s own Saniya Gay caught up with hip-hop legend Juvenile, with video by team member Cameryn Bianca, to get his thoughts on HBCU culture and what he’d teach in a class called Juvenile 101.

Celebrating HBCU Culture
Saniya opened the conversation by asking Juvenile what he felt was the most important part of being part of an HBCU community.
Juvenile responded with heartfelt words about heritage and pride:
“I think the fact that it’s Black. You know, they used to always say that your skin is your sin. Well, it’s different right here. Your skin is your blessing. And the fact that it’s culture-driven, too. Man, they represent me to the fullest, and I’m representing them to the fullest. All my people, everybody that I know and I love went to HBCU. So this is us.”
His words underscored why events like HBCU Week are more than just entertainment, they’re a celebration of community, history, and identity.
Juvenile 101: Health, Fitness, and Fun
Saniya’s final question to Juvenile brought a playful twist: If HBCU Week offered a class called “Juvenile 101,” what would you teach students in the first week?
Juvenile’s answer had the people laughing backstage:
“I would get some professional dancers in there and teach them how to exercise. Health is wealth. I’m going to teach them how to stretch them glutes and work them abs. There is going to be a lot of backing up in there.”
This humorous but meaningful answer showed a lighter side of the rap icon while reinforcing the importance of health and wellness and making sure the new generation knew how to dance to the classic song, lol!
A Team Effort Behind the Scenes
The interview was brought to life thanks to the teamwork of Saniya Gay, who led the conversation with poise and energy, and Cameryn Bianca, who handled the video production that captured the entire moment. Together, the duo highlighted the vibrancy of HBCU Week and provided our audience with an authentic glimpse behind the scenes.
HBCU Week at The Queen continues to shine a spotlight on Black culture, education, and entertainment, and this exclusive backstage moment with Juvenile reminds us of the event’s unique blend of music, history, and community spirit.
