The Delaware State Police are investigating a line-of-duty death after a trooper was killed in a shooting at the Karen L. Johnson Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Wilmington/New Castle on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
According to the official release:
- A 44-year-old man, identified as Rahman Rose, entered the DMV as a customer and approached Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, a 10-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, who was working an overtime assignment at the reception desk.
- The suspect shot Snook with a handgun; despite being wounded, Snook pushed a DMV employee out of harm’s way and told others to flee as the suspect continued firing.
- Customers were allowed to leave by the shooter before he fired on responding officers. A New Castle County police officer then shot the suspect. Both Snook and the shooter later died at hospitals.
- A second trooper and a civilian woman sustained minor injuries unrelated to gunfire.
- Authorities continue to investigate and are asking witnesses to come forward.
Snook, 34, of Hockessin, Delaware, was remembered as a dedicated officer, husband and father, praised for his bravery in saving others.
