The first-ever matchup featured DeSean Jackson’s Delaware State Hornets facing off against Michael Vick’s Norfolk State Spartans, both coached by former NFL stars and Philadelphia Eagles teammates. The game electrified the city with its blend of competitive spirit, halftime entertainment, and community unity, marking a major milestone for HBCU athletics.

With support from the Philadelphia Eagles organization, Delaware State hopes to continue hosting the Classic each year at The Linc, turning it into a signature fall tradition for HBCU fans across the Mid-Atlantic.

“It felt like a classic,” said Delaware State University President Tony Allen in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The inaugural event drew national attention and local pride, highlighting the growing visibility of HBCU sports and the role of partnerships between professional franchises and historically Black institutions.

If plans move forward, the annual Classic could bring even more alumni, students, and community members together, solidifying Philadelphia as a key hub for HBCU football celebrations.
