Dr. Hicks, a Wilmington, Delaware resident, will officially assume the role on July 6, 2026, following a national search led by ACP’s Board of Regents. With this appointment, he becomes the first African American physician to lead ACP, the largest medical specialty organization in the United States.

Currently serving as president of ChristianaCare’s Wilmington campus, Dr. Hicks oversees strategic operations, financial performance, and day-to-day leadership of one of Delaware’s largest healthcare hubs.

Dr. Hicks brings decades of experience in clinical care, executive leadership, and academic medicine. He has built a national reputation for advancing health equity and addressing healthcare disparities, key priorities expected to shape his leadership at ACP.

He will succeed Darilyn Moyer, MD, who is set to retire in July 2026 after a historic tenure as one of the longest-serving leaders of a medical specialty society.

In his new role, Dr. Hicks will serve as ACP’s senior staff leader, responsible for guiding policies, supporting physicians nationwide, and advancing patient-centered, high-quality care.

ACP represents more than 160,000 internal medicine physicians and medical professionals across over 170 countries, making this appointment one of the most significant leadership transitions in modern U.S. healthcare.
